Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) Centralised Monitoring System.

The CMWSSB was established in 1978 to to enhance the health and quality of life of the citizens of Chennai by providing them with adequate supply of clean and good quality water and by safe disposal of sewage/waste water at a reasonable price and to improve the environment. At present it serves a population of about 60 Lakhs mostly in the Chennai City Area. The CMWSSB has taken significant initiatives to supply adequate quantity of water with good quality and also to redress the grievances of the citizens within the minimum time possible.

To augment the above, CMWSS Board had proposed to set up Telemetry and SCADA system for monitoring Water Distribution Stations, Head Works and Sewage Pumping Stations for water pumping and sewerage pumping stations coming under Area VI and Area VII of the CMWSSB. At present the water supply distribution stations, sewage pumping stations and treatment plants are designed for manual operation and monitored through personal supervision at site. To improve the operation and maintenance of the equipments in the stations, a computerised system using Telemetry and SCADA was proposed, where field operations can be monitored from a single control system. This would lead to improved monitoring and regulation of water supply and sewerage system.

On this Account, MEL Systems and Services Limited was entrusted in Supply delivery erection testing and commissioning of Field instruments for Data access, such as Electro Magnetic Flow meters, Ultra sonic Level sensors, Pressure Transmitters, On line Ph and Residual Chlorine indicators, Electrically operated rising spindle type vale with actuators, energy meters, leads and cables for sensors etc.

Sensing & Collection of process parameters such as Residual chlorine, PH, water / sewage levels in UGT’s , collection wells etc., flow rate , pump status, motor drive status from the Head Works and Sewage Pumping Stations by installing a Remote Telemetry Units(RTU) which would function as a Programmable Logic Controller(PLC), Data logger and supports multi-communication modems like GSM dialup, SMS, GPS synchronized master clock, and Industrial Ethernet Broadband .

Storage of collected data and provide Management Information System in the form of informative screen displays, and reports using SCADA package and install Servers at CMWSSB Head Office and Personal Computers at Area Offices and pumping stations along with other components and peripherals.

Setting up a Wide Area Network and Transmission of data using Telemetry system. The Remote Telemetry units installed at various stations will transfer Data and in time of crisis it will also intimate the problems through SMS.

Electronic Field instruments for Data access, such as Electro Magnetic Flow meters, Ultra sonic Level sensors, Pressure Transmitters, have been installed at the above mentioned locations. On-line Ph and Residual Chlorine analyzers with indicators, have been installed additionally in Head works and water distribution stations.
