creating a name for himself in the street art scene and landing
himself on some big projects, it seems as though success has not
gotten to the head of graffiti artist, Kenji Chai, who was born and
raised in the simple city of Sandakan, Sabah. Currently honing his
skills in Kuala Lumpur, he discovered his passion for art from a
young age. The humble artist sits down for a chat and tells us about
his life and work.
First of all, whatwas it about graffiti that attractedyou to it?
Since primary school, I started participating in art competitions andwent on to complete
a course in graphic design later on after graduating. I remember immersing myself in
comic books, cartoons and story books froman early age, which serves as an inspiration
for my vibrant characters that you can now see today. While I hadmy career as a graphic
designer, I discovered the world of graffiti in 2008 through a friend. I find it to be a
completely different experience when working on a real wall compared to a computer
and extremely rewarding in terms of personal satisfaction when a piece is completed.
