Driver Distraction
There are many activities that drivers routinely undertake that can distract them from the core task of driving. Simple activities
such as checking the GPS unit, tuning the radio, changing a CD, adjusting ventilation controls, glancing at a mobile phone
message, consulting a navigational map, eating and drinking are distractions that have been proven to be contributing factors in
motor vehicle accidents. Drivers are encouraged to minimise these activities and adopt safe driving techniques. For example,
only adjust radio controls when stopping at a traffic light. Pull over and safely park before attempting to eat. Drivers who adopt
an awareness of these potential distractions and implement common sense controls will minimise the potential for a driving
distraction which may result in an accident.
Are We There Yet?
Road trips are fun-tastic if things go as planned, which iswhy keeping everyone safe
and sound throughout the trip is important –especiallywhen you’re travellingwith
children. Here are some road-safety tips–beyond securing your child’s car seat – to
consider for your next long drivewith the little ones.
Check-Up!
Have
your trusted
mechanic check on your
car. Let him know that
you’re taking a road trip
and get him to change
the oil and filters, fill
up fluids, check the
tyres and make sure
your spare is properly
inflated.
Fuel Check
Don’t
let your fuel level go below one-quarter of
the tank.
Clean Air
Turn
on the AC in
your car and open the
windows 10 minutes
before departing – rid
your car of mould and
dust mites for a smooth
journey, especially if
your child has asthma
or allergies.
Don’t leave
home…
Without
an
emergency
medical kit
containing plasters,
thermometer, allergy
medicine and any
other medicine you
may need.
Get Enough Sleep
It’s
important for
your children to be
well rested before the
trip, more so for you.
Sleep deprivation
causes frazzled
nerves that may lead
to unsafe driving.
Stick to It
Stick
on the main road instead of
venturing on unfamiliar territories
in your attempt to avoid unexpected
traffic, especially at night.
