Did You Know
It was not that long ago that cordless phones
were invented and the impact that they had
on people’s lives were amazing. For the first
time, one could walk around the house and
talk without having to be tethered to a
cord. These phones became a household
essential, but do you know how they
actually worked?
C
ordless
phones originated in the
1980s andwere packedwith technology.
They were the first devices to enable
landline conversations to be taken
around the house.
Reconverted radio signal
Made up of a handset and a base, the handset relied on
the base towork. The base is plugged into a telephone
jack and receives the incoming call as an electrical signal.
This signal is then converted into a radio signal that is
transmitted to the headset.
This radio signal then gets reconverted into an electri-
cal signal by the handset, where it is sent to the speaker
andmade audible. As you talk into the headset, your
voice is broadcast as a radio signal to the base,
where it is converted to an electrical signal and
sent through the phone line.
Technology has improved over the years
and the essentials like range, sound
quality and sound security have gotten
somuch better. Some of the long-range
cordless phones enable you tomake
and receive calls fromas far as 50m
fromthe base station.
