Savour
From Thailand With Love
Miraculously finding a parking spot with relative ease at the Publika Shopping Gallery,
Reuben Miranda
makes his way to Ekkamai Publika Bar & Thai Kitchen to sample the
culinary delights that people are raving about.

in Bangkok,
Thailand is amainly
residential area known for
its high priced condomini-
ums, its excellent number
of restaurants of different cuisines, bars
and nightclubs. The name of this outlet
was bornwhen the two owners, Ekachai
Urairat andMei-Li Tanwere standing
at the Ekkamai BTS skytrain station in
Bangkok. Inspiration hit when Tan realised
that their names -when combined -
sounded remarkably similar (Ek andMei
Li) to ‘Ekkamai’.
Palate cleanser
The outlet is beautifully done up,
withmuted lighting, a good sized bar,
gorgeous, hand-painted Thai inspired
pictures on thewalls and simple tables
and chairs.Walking in puts one immedi-
ately at ease. Fromthe friendly greeting
to thewhole ambiance of the place, you
will feel the cares of the day slipping
away. There is also a large outdoor seating
section for thosewhowould rather not be
stuck indoors.
It is awell known fact that people eat
with their eyes before anything even
passes the lips, and the food that came out
was a veritable feast formy eyes. I already
had a Thai Song Beer cocktail in front of
me. This rather fruity, yet power-packed
drink is a combination of vodka,Monin
grapefruit syrup,mint syrup, lime juice
and a squeeze of lemon. There is also a
bottle of Singha beer that is upended into
the glass, using a special holder. The beer
feeds into the drink as the level goes down.
Absolutely delicious and highly creative.
MiangKamPrawns
was the first dish to
arrive at the table. Looking at a copy of
themenu that had been prepared forme,
I realised that therewasmore to come
…a lotmore…Each prawnwas sitting
on a
daun kadok
leaf,which had a dollop
of spicy tamarind sauce on them. The
leaf,which is peppery tasting, combined
with the tamarind sauce, gave a crisp,
clean flavour that was an excellent palate
cleanser.
