past few years has
seen a sudden increase
of awareness towards
healthy l ifestyles and
gene ra l we l l -be i ng .
People have begun to
realise the importance of
eating right and participating in physical
activities. Unfortunately, for some people,
moderation isnotalwaysthekey inachiev-
ing their desired health and fitness goals.
By pushing themselves to the limit with
sports and other physical activities, they
end up with sports injuries. This is where
KPJ Klang comes in.
What is a sports injury?
Even though, by definition sports injuries
refer to injuries caused by sports, it is not
always the case, as arthritis and muscle
tears from doing heavy work or non-
sports-related activities also fall into this
category. Malaysia has classified injuries
by specialty but in certain countries, like
Australia, itgoesbyregionsof thebody, like
the shoulder andknee. Elbows andankles
areothercommonly injuredbodypartsdue
to sports but they are not as common as
shoulder and knee injuries, which are the
moreoftenseensport injuriesatKPJKlang.
Someof themore common injuries are
ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) and soft
ligament tear injuries causedbysports like
football and futsal. Dislocated shoulders
and tears of important structures are
mostly caused by overstretching of the
shoulder backwards when playing bad-
minton. Cycling, which is currently a very
popular leisure activity, also contributes
to quite a number of sports injury cases.
According to the hospital, sports inju-
ries can be classified into two categories,
acuteandchronic. Acute injuries that have
occurred less than two weeks before
treatmentmeans that repair canbeeasier.
Chronic injuries, which have gone more
than two to three months without treat-
ment, aremore difficult to treat.
