Diving
Langkawi
L
angkawi
has emerged as a key holiday
destination for Malaysians and it is
enjoying a growing popularity among
the Asian, Middle Eastern and Russian
tourists. During local school holidays,
ferries operating from Kuala Perlis and Kuala
Kedah are packed, carrying holidaymakers to
the island.
Marine Park
Many tourists flock to Langkawi to enjoy the duty
free shopping and the idyllic island activities.
Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy watersking along
Chenang Beach, zip-lining 30 metres above the
ground through the 100-year-old rainforest or
snorkeling at Payar Marine Park.
Scuba diving is quite a popular outdoor activity
inMalaysia, especially in Sabah and the East Coast
of Peninsular Malaysia. Although Langkawi also
has its fair share of dive spots, it lies at the bottom
of the list of diving destinations in Malaysia. I
strongly believe that Langkawi and its neighbour-
ing islands have some interesting marine treasures
that would be of interest to scuba divers like me.
It is possible that these dive sites have not been
fully explored or documented for divers and dive
operators to take notice of.
Diving in Langkawi is done at Payar Marine
Park, which is a 30minute speedboat journey from
