The Lantern Festival is the last day of
the Chinese Spring Festival, which is
the Chinese NewYear festival. After
the Lantern Festival, Chinese NewYear
taboos are no longer in effect, and all
NewYear decorations are taken down.
The Lantern Festival is also the first full
moon night in the Chinese calendar,
marking the return of spring and
symbolising the reunion of family.
The lighting and appreciation of lanterns
is themain activity of the festival. When
the festival comes, lanterns of various
shapes and sizes - fish, goats and
various others - are seen everywhere
including households, shoppingmalls
and parks, and streets. Lighting lanterns
is away for people to pray that theywill
have smooth futures and express their
best wishes for their families. Women
whowant to be pregnant walk under a
hanging lantern praying for a child.”
