There is nomystery as
towhywe love going on
holiday – it is fun! But did
you know that holidays
can also be good for
your health, your career
and your relationships?
Healing
H
olidays
are, lucky
for us, something of a
modern phenomenon.
Years ago, people only
took rest days on reli-
gious occasions, and
for some, a day off was
only permitted if you were dying or dead!
Holidays are now an entitlement,
and seen as a right to all those formally
employed or studying. Fun aside, taking
holidays has a lot of benefits – all the
more reason to take more of them!
Sleep It Off
Holiday time offers a chance to catch up
on sleep, which has all sorts of benefits to
body and mind. Sleep is the opportunity
for the mind and body to heal and repair,
and more sleep is associated with im-
proved mental performance, a reduction
in premature ageing and a better immune
system to keep illness away.
Feasting
Being on holiday usually involves eating
different foods and trying things that
aren’t normally part of your diet. While
some may overeat on holiday, the variety
of foods can be good for the body, as the
more variety eaten the larger the range
of nutrients the body can gain. Try and
have lots of fruit and vegetables to get
the maximum benefits from your holiday
eating.
Fitness
As many people spend their working
hours sitting at a desk, holiday time
involves much more movement and
exercise than normal, and will likely
result in a trimmer figure. Being more
active is good for overall health and also
serves as an energy boost.
to think and you feel happy, you can get a
better idea of what you want in life, and it
could enable you to see the bigger picture
and figure out if you are really spending
your time on the things that matter, and
whether your career is on track to achieve
the things you want.
Stress Buster
Research into the effects of holidays on
the body have found that holidaymakers
tend to have a reduction in blood pressure
and also return from their break able to
cope with stress more efficiently.
Eager Employee
Although taking time away from a busy
job can seem stressful, having a break
will make your more creative, more
productive and more energetic when you
return, able to handle challenges more
efficiently and be a better worker.
Finding Yourself
When day-to-day life is such a rush, it
is easy to lose touch with your sense of
self, and a holiday is an opportunity to
get back to basics – what do you like to
do? To eat? To see? When you have time
