ART
SCENE
There is no limit to art. It often
materialises from themost unexpected
mediums, like coloured pencils, which
has never really been taken seriously as
a tool for art.
Sharon Kow
is taking colour
pencil art to the next level with her
life-like artworks which depict simple,
everyday objects.
Fireflyz
talks to the
coloured pencils artist about her journey
in pursuing thismediumof art.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your art
blog ‘Coloured Pencils After 40’.
I have been a self-taught coloured pencils artist
since 2013. I currently live and works in Batu
Ferringhi, Penang.
Coloured Pencils After 40
is all
about my journey as a colour pencil artist from
the day I started to pursue this medium seriously.
It is more of a diary where I can ‘talk’ about my
art to myself.
After surveying the local art scene for support
and networking opportunities, I found out that
this medium was not taken seriously. It was
considered childish and it had no footing in the
local art scene. I decided to turn to social media
and started posting all my artwork and connecting
with other colour pencil artists internationally.
What is the inspiration behind your works?
My style of art gravitates towards photo realism,
paying extreme attention to details and nuances
of colour and light. My inspirations derive from
simple and everyday subjects. To me, these
common subjects reflect my perception of the
many human emotions and therefore every piece
of my art reveals a deeper meaning than just a
beautiful subject.
What makes you stick to coloured pencils as the
main tools/medium for your artwork?
Whenever people see my work, they do not
believe that mere coloured pencils could produce
such refined work. Coloured pencils art requires
lots of patience and is very time consuming. It is
a process which I enjoy very much and love the
fact that a humble pencil can achieve so much.
How different are you from other artists out
there?
I am no different compared to any other artists
but I work slower because of the nature of the
medium.
