of an establishment that were
used to illegally sell alcoholic
beverages during Prohibition,
which was a time when the sale
of alcohol was not allowed in
America and Canada. The Speak
takes its name from this era, but there is nothing il-
legal about this place. It is comfortable and friendly.
Community Pub
Dave Carpenter and Mancharan Singh, the men
behind The Speak, had a mission. They wanted
the pub to be a community pub where regulars
are always welcome and new patrons are made to
feel comfortable. In that they have succeeded. The
regulars that were there were all chatting amicably
and anyone who walked in was greeted by a smile
and a “hello” by the staff.
The Speak opened for business at the end of
October 2015 and seems to have already made
her mark on the Bangsar Baru landscape. When
asked, Carpenter said that the response had been
very good so far and he credits this to the fact
that The Speak is more than just your standard
watering hole.
There is a wonderfull ‘chill out’ area that has
a sofa next to a bookshelf that is lined with books
and a standing lamp. The bookshelf is part of an
initiative that Carpenter created. He calls it the
‘book exchange’. Come in with a book and leave
with one. If you do not have a book on hand and
see something that you would like to read, a RM10
deposit will get you that book.
