our
partners. One bril-
liant idea. A lot of hard
work. The result? Kom-
passion at Damansara
KIm, Kuala Lumpur. Fast
forward a few months
and the idea has ex-
panded to the creation of Kompassion
II. Unlike Kompassion, Kompassion II
does not serve pork, which means that
the population of non-pork eaters can
now feast on the stunning dishes that
are served.
Welcoming
Some restaurants can be quite intimidat-
ing. From the decor to the staff, you may
sometimes feel hesitant to walk in. Not
so at this outlet. I was greeted cheerfully
but a member of the service staff when
I walked in. As the two partners that I
were to meet had not arrived yet, I had a
look around the outlet. The decor is calm
and rustic. One wall is wallpapered with
pages from an old Thai calendar, which
looks very similar to the old Chinese
calendars that you would have seen, and
sometimes still do, in traditional Chinese
coffee shops. The tables and chairs are
simple yet comfortable, with wall lights
obviously took as much pride in the
presentation of his dishes as he did in
the flavours of them. I put a whole piece
in my mouth, bit down and had my taste
buds jumping with joy at the flavours.
It was very fresh and tangy, filled with
fresh, smoked duck, pumpkin seeds,
sunflower seeds, almonds, mint leaves
and lemongrass.
Sounds fishy
The dishes came out quickly after that
amazing starter.
The Pan Seared Fish
in Miso Sauce and Green Curry
with
Grilled Beef
were next. The fish used
was
ikan siakap
(Asian seabass) and
it was delicious. The fillet was grilled
to perfection and finished in the oven,
garnished with thinly sliced tomatoes,
onions and shallots. It was slightly sweet
and spicy, with the flavours compliment
each other. The sweetness came from
the palm sugar and honey used. The
winner between these two dishes, for
me, was the beef. Juicy, tender grilled
beef in a green curry that was made
using a combination of coconut milk and
cooking cream. I could eat this dish for
breakfast, lunch and dinner!
The
Otak-Otak Omelette
was a twist
on this well known Southeast Asian
dish.
Otak-Otak
is steamed and moist
fish custard wrapped with banana, but
here it is served in an omelette.
Level 1
Tom Yam Soup
was next up, and like
all the previous dishes, this did not
disappoint. The one that was served was
at Level 1. There are three levels, with
Level 3 being the spiciest. Level 1 suited
that had been customised.
We soon got down to business with
the food. I had apparently picked the
right time for this food review as it
was going to be an introduction of the
new dishes that are going to go on the
ala-carte menu. The first dish to be
served was the
Vietnamese Spring Rolls
with Smoked Duck
. It is a known fact
that people eat with their eyes and mine
were feasting on this dish. Chef Nikom
