• One of the main inspirations for The X-Files was the
1970’s television series Kolchak: The Night Stalker. The
series featured Chicago reporter Carl Kolchak, who
investigated mysterious crimes that often involved
supernatural and science-fiction elements.
• A report saying that 3.7 million people had claimed to
have been abducted by aliens led creator Chris Carter to
come up with the idea for The X-Files.
• Agent Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) is a believer and
Agent Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) is a skeptic. In real
life, it is Duchovny who is the skeptic and Anderson who
is the believer.
• Clarice Starling from Silence of the Lambs was the
inspiration for the character of Dana Scully.
• Andersonwas only 24 years oldwhen shewas cast in the
show, though network executives wanted her replaced
with someone more glamorous.
• Comedy stars Jack Black and Luke Wilson had minor
cameo parts in the series during its long run. This was
before both of them went on to becoming major stars.
• The pilot episodewas only the second time that Anderson
had been on camera.
• Anderson spent most of her time during filming standing
on a box. This was because she was a full 10 inches
shorter than Duchovny. The producers made a special
box to address the height differential between the two
actors.
• Before being cast as the Cigarette-SmokingMan, William
B. Davis had not smoked a cigarette in 20 years. After
smoking real cigarettes for the first two seasons of the
show, he then switched over to herbal ones.
• The FBI badges used in the show read “Federal Bureau of
Justice, United States Department of Investigation.” This
was done because creating a fake FBI badge is illegal,
even for television and films.
