tan since 1871
and has under-
gone a number
of renovations and restorations
over the years. In the 1960’s, this
famous landmark was nearly
torn down but the then first-lady
Jacqueline Kennedy stepped in
and had it designated as a historic
American landmark.
Renovations at the Grand
Central Terminal were completed
in 1998, and once more in 2007,
with this NewYork City landmark
receiving an extensive cleaning
of its ceiling. The Grand Central
ceiling features a huge astro-
nomical mural, a fact that was
often not noticed by passengers
for many years. As many as 50
painters worked on the mural,
trying to ensure that there was
no variation in colour tone. They
also experimented to find just the
proper shade of blue.The terminal
is one of the world’s most visited
tourist attractions, with 21.9 mil-
lion visitors in 2013.
