G
oing
off on holiday
usually means spend-
ing more time outdoors
than is typical, espe-
cially for people with
office jobs who rarely
leave their desks. While
on holiday, it is easy to forget just how
powerful and damaging the sun can be
to your skin.
Sunburn is a risk in the short-term – no
one likes to be red and sore – but the long
term risks of overexposure run to brown
spots, dry andwrinkled skin and even skin
cancer, as ultraviolet rays from the sun can
kill skin cells in some people.
Vitamin D
Before you panic and hide away from the
rays, remember that sunshine is good
for our skin and bodies too. Sunshine
provides vital vitamin D that helps care
for your bones and a deficiency of which
can cause serious medical problems.
That said, sunshine should be enjoyed in
moderation. Here are some simple ways
you can take care of your skin while in the
sun andmake sure you enjoy your holiday
without dermatological repercussions.
Think about the time
Be mindful that the sun is at it’s most
powerful between 10am and 4pm, with
noon the peak period. Take extra precau-
tions during this time, whether that means
keeping out of the sun, covering your body
or wearing suncream.
Clothing and hats
Hats are perfect for keeping the rays
from your face while clothing to cover

the exposed areas should ideally be dark colours, as these absorb the ultraviolet rays
better than light colours. Dry clothes are also better than wet ones, as are tightly-woven
fabrics rather than cotton.
Suncream
Use a cream with a minimum of SPF 15 and make sure the layer you spread on your
skin is not too thin – if too thin it can reduce the effectiveness by up to 50%. Make sure
you reapply after swimming and choose waterproof cream if you will be in and out
the water a lot. It is also important to remember that it takes the body 20-30 minutes
to absorb cream, so apply before you get out in the rays.
Head, neck and hands
Around 80% of skin cancers occur on the head, neck and hands as these areas are
easily exposed and easily forgotten. Make sure you keep the back of your neck covered,
wear a hat and slap some cream on your hands.
Reflections
Sun reflects off flat surfaces – you may be under an umbrella, but the sunlight can still
bounce up and find your exposed sections if you are not mindful.
Avoid tanning oils
Tanning oils are designed to enhance the effect of ultraviolet rays so avoid at all costs
– you may as well slather yourself in cooking oil and invite a burn!
