A joint exhibition produces tales fromtwo cities in various, visually stunningmediums.
A
s
one of the fastest
growing private gal-
leries in the Klang
Valley, the G13 Gal-
lery has been at the
forefront of actively
promoting talented
young contemporary Malaysian and
other upcoming South-East Asian visual
artists. The gallery also actively seeks
regional platforms to showcase the artists
they represent. Its frequent participation
in a number of internationally renowned
art events around the region signals
a readiness to be taken seriously as
a significant player in the Malaysian
contemporary visual art scene. A recent
joint exhibition with Tin Aw Gallery, one
of the Philippines’ top contemporary art
galleries, is another milestone for this
Gallery, “The idea of collaboration came
about when I struck up an acquaintance
with Dawn Atienza, the owner of Tin-Aw
Art Gallery from the Philippines, at last
year’s Art Taipei in Taiwan.” It was this
brief but fruitful exchange that led to the
exhibition.
Passion for art
Passion is what drives Teng’s ambition to
expose the works of Malaysian artists to
audiences abroad. Especially encouraged
by the positive reception to his selection
of artists from previous participations
in regional art fairs and related events,
Teng knows that joint collaborations
with other like-minded galleries also
offers golden opportunities for interesting
shows to be exhibited in both perticipat-
ing countries. This has the positive effect
gallery. Entitled ‘Tales from the City’, this
joint exhibition featured three upcoming
artists from both galleries.
Urbanise me
Working in various mediums and ap-
proaches, the works by Gan Sze Hooi,
Gan Tee Sheng, Khairudin Zainudin
and their Filipino counterparts, Francis
Commeyne, Kirby Roxas and Kurt Lluch
seeked to portray a number of shared
realities faced by the urbanites in the
two countries. From the continuing
urbanisation process which changes
the two cities geographical layouts to
the intended or unintended effects on
the inhabitants, these tales from the
city are ultimately real life stories about
the people and the places around them.
