W

spectacular

attractions for
the first-time
tourist, there are only so many pictures
one can take of the Opera House and
the Harbour Bridge before wondering…
is that it?
There is also the risk that a two-week
holiday in the Australian city will leave
you with no clearer idea as to what is
the real Sydney, the one the locals know
and love.
Sometimes the best places to go
are not in any tourist book or guide,
open air swimming pools that are a
must-go during the hot summer months,
especially as admission is usually only
AUS$6! The pools are surrounded by
places to laze and usually have a café
or bar on site, so you can make a day of
it just like the locals do!
Market Madness
Saturday morning is market time,
with every neighbourhood and suburb
boasting its own gaggle of stalls that
shoot up with the sun and host local
producers selling their wares. Expect to
find vintage clothes, second hand books,
handmade crafts and jewellery as well
as food and drink stalls galore!
Not only are the markets a great place
and certainly won’t be on the open
top bus tour. Often it’s better to go
‘alternative’ and get an understanding
of what Sydney has to offer the millions
who call it home.
Park Life
Sydney boasts over 400 parks and open
spaces, taking up almost 200 hectares
and ensuring all residents can find a
bit of grass to rub their toes on within
a stone’s throw of their home. While
some parks are small, many are large,
well-tended and rather lovely with
lakes, streams, flowers and benches for
chilling out with friends or watching the
world go by.
