dence. Some have come
to be very complacent
about independence
and the peace that it
accords. It is doubtful
that the significance of this day resonates
with the youth of today andmany will not
be aware, or even care, of the hard work
that was involved.
Breaking free from the Colonial rule
Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka!
was not an easy task, and gaining Inde-
pendence brought its own pain, with blood
being spilled. Lest we forget the courage
shown and the sacrifices made,
Fireflyz
pays homage to the leaders who led this
magnificent South East Asian country from
Independence until now.
Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra
(1957 - 1970)
For his contributions and sacrifices in
taking the country from colonialism to
independence, Tunku Abdul Rahman is
known as the Father of Independence.
He was the first prime minister of the
Federation of Malaya from 1957 to 1963
and of Malaysia from 1963 to 1970. Tunku
received his early education at the Deb-
surin School, Bangkok and Penang Free
School.
In 1925, he received his Bachelor of
Arts in law and history from St. Cath-
erine’s College, Cambridge. His attempt
