Of Snores and Snooze:
T
he
ubiquity of snoring has rendered it a normal state of
affairs for many; so much so that many regard its presence
as suggestive of good, deep sleep. While it is true that
some snoring is benign, in some others, it may signal that
something is not quite right with the individual’s sleep.
Sleep is an essential part of a person’s life, especially
since it is necessary for proper physical, emotional and
psychological balance, with health professionals advocating between six
to eight hours of sleep per day for optimum functioning. This translates
to about a third of our lives asleep, and if you’re not getting correct or
adequate sleep, it is akin to having a third of your life wasted.
For most people, making slight adjustments to their dietary and
lifestyle habits such as practicing good sleep hygiene can help, but what
of us who suffer frommore serious somnolence issues such as Obstructive
Sleep Apnoea (OSA)?
Snoring: What’s the Verdict?
“Though snoring may be part of normal sleeping physiology, loud and
intermittent snoring with snorting is not normal at all”, asserts Dato’
Dr. Zainudin Md. Zain, physician, respirologist and head of the KPJ
Damansara Specialist Hospital (DSH) Sleep Study Centre.
When the snoring is loud, and presents with intermittent interruption
with pauses and gasps for air, it is a strong sign that the individual may be
suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA), a condition that greatly
disrupts the quality of the patient’s sleep.
Due to obstruction of the airways, fluctuations in blood pressure, heart
rate and oxygen levels prevent the patient from going into deep stages
of sleep, hence why there is a feeling of malaise, lethargy and excessive
sleepiness the day after.
Sleep may have occurred, but rest has not. Furthermore, Obstructive
Sleep Apnoea too is known to be associated with increased risk of heart
disease and stroke.
