One should never visit Malacca
without slurping down a bowl of spicy,
creamy, curry-filled
Nyonya Laksa
. Once
again, I followed the crowd and was
greeted by the strong aroma of bubbling
spices at Jonker 88. While waiting in
yet another line, I was fascinated by the
walls strewn with tiny artefacts. Chinese
tapestry, rusty typewriters, and old coins
adorned each nook of the store. The
only thing missing from its old-school
ambiance were the bearded Hipsters.
While shamelessly licking up every
last drop of curry, I noticed a petite girl
carrying a bowl filled with a mountain of
ice. Shaved ice piled high with a generous
dollop of silky golden-brown syrup, little
green slivers peeking out from under-
neath the white snow like precious Jade
stones; the
Nyonya Cendol
, aka God’s
elixir. And since I still felt a little peckish, I

you hi t the
ground eating, there are
a few things you should
know about Malacca:
It’s excruciatingly hot
(dress appropriately!),
you’ re going to be
squished between a sea of people, and
delicious is an understatement when
describing the food of this state.
Throughout the trip, I nailed down a
routine that kept me perpetually happy
– buy, savour then proclaimmy undying
love for the devoured dish. My first hunt
led me to LW Nyonya Pineapple Tarts
House. Tart after tart after tart, baked to
golden perfection, glistening beneath the
scorching sun. The pastry was buttery
and crisp with just the right amount of
salt – just the way I like it.

took a back seat for me on this trip as I had only one goal

Historical City of Food
So, when the crowd decided to weave
through massive Harley-Davidsons and
Ducatis, I did it. Chung Wah Restaurant,
located right next to the Hard Rock Café,
is constantly dishing out plate after
plate of balls … chicken rice balls to be
specific. Pretty much like its name says,
the dish simply is steamed chicken served
with savoury rice balls. According to
the Chinese uncle behind me, this dish
was created so workers could enjoy a
hassle-free meal while minding seaports.
My next stop was a hop, skip and
car ride away. Located in the pictur-
esque town of Klebang, you’ll find the
namesake
Original Klebang Coconut
Shake. A creamy concoction of fresh
coconut, vanilla ice cream and ice. Bring
a magazine, and maybe even a beach
chair, because you’re going to be waiting
in line for a long while.
