. You don’t have to
buy breakfast for ev-
eryone in the morning.
We spend almost
half our day at work;
sitting in our chairs,
staring at the monitor
boards behind our tiny little cubicles.
But for those who are more fortunate
and have the advantage of working
from home or their own office; good
for you. But most of us are stuck in
little compartment-like space with an-
noying neighbours and centralised air
conditioner that sometimes requires us
to reach for our cardies and sweaters.
But let’s go back to the ‘annoying
neighbour’ part. Have you ever expe-
rienced sitting next to someone who
laughed way too loud or spent most of
the working hours on their iPhones while
spinning around in their chairs? What
about those who unapologetically watch
porn or view dirty pictures? These people
are distractions and they definitely need
to learn a thing or two about cubicle
etiquette.
Here are some cubicle etiquette tips
How to be a
Good Cubicle Neighbour
which not only help us gain people’s
respect at work but also help us to be
more productive on a day-to-day basis.
Answering the phone
If you are talking on your cell phone
discussing personal matter, leave the
cubicle and go somewhere else more
private. Your cubicle neighbours do not
want to know about the ‘plan for tonight’
or other personal family related issues.
Scent that lingers
Be careful with what you bring into your
cubicle. If it produces a strong smell, ask
your neighbours if they are okay with it
because some people might have allergic
reaction to strong smells. Oh! And please
don’t eat in the cubicle. It is stated there
in the office rules and regulations.
The decorations
If you want to decorate your space
to help you become more productive,
please be sensitive to what is appropriate
and inappropriate for people around
you. Your annual Babes of the Year
calendar is definitely a no-no. Same
goes with your computer wallpaper.
Collage of your girlfriends photos in her
underwear? Maybe not. Don’t forget
about other decorative items like political
flags, spiritual symbols and other stuff
that might leave your neighbours feeling
uncomfortable.
Your voice
If you decided to have a chat with people
next to you, it is okay to go into his/her
space instead of shouting from your seat.
Loud talking voice annoys others who are
trying to work or meet deadlines. Same
goes with computer speaker volume.
Actually, ditch the speakers altogether
and opt for a set of good earphones.
Privacy
You might find it difficult to not spy over
your cubicle wall sometimes, especially
when there is a heated conversation
at the other end of the room or if your
cubicle is right next to the main entrance.
It’s not cool to snoop around like that.
If you want others to respect your pri-
vacy, then you will have to do the same
towards others first.
