Let’s Be An Engineer!

word“engineer”would
probably evoke images of
bright yellow hard hats,
construction sites and

the field of engineering is
way broader and diverse, traversing every
industry and impacting just about every
aspect of day-to-day life. While a strong
foundation in mathematics and science is
important, engineers need to have a sense
of curiosity and a deep desire to take on

the world’s challenges and improve our
quality of life.
Engineering typically focusses on one
or more specialty areas or disciplines.
While each discipline has specific educa-
tional requirements, most employers value
practical experience as well, hence intern-
ship or work placement programmes
(such as thosewhere college students earn
credit for structured work experience)
are highly valuable and often required
in order to graduate with an engineering
degree.
We need more students who are col-
lege and career ready in science, technol-
ogy, engineering and math (STEM). As
Malaysia is moving towards a developed
nation status by 2020, it is imperative that
we have enough proficient and competent
STEM graduates and engineers to meet
our human capital needs in order to tackle
the unique challenges of the 21st century.

An Engineering degree is
not an end to education but
a beginning of a lifetime
adventure of endless
possibilities.”

As a civil engineering
graduate, I was drawn to
the fact that engineers
lay the foundation for
humanity’s advancement…
for example, civil engineers
are taught how to safely
and economically design
a bridge. Nowat work, the
concept has not changed
-we uphold the safety and
economic commitments and
we do it with integrity.”

Engineersmake things
happen…in this day and
agewhen change is about
the only constant factor,
engineers are typically right
in the centre of the change
mechanism. Engineers drive
change.”
