began even before
I’d set foot on the
Tudor-style bou-
tique resort. Uncle
Shan, who manages transportation for
guests, personally gave me a ride in
the 30-year-old Mercedes Benz that he
inherited from his father.
He regaled me with tales of his child-
hood in and around the highlands – a
time when occasional tiger intrusions
into his village of Lobok Tamang (the site
of present-day Sultan Ahmad Shah Lake
fronting the resort) were not unheard of.
The three-hour journey from Kuala
Lumpur melted away fleetingly as he
spoke of the hillside resort’s past. It’s
original owner, Lt. Col. Stanley Jack
Foster, a retired British Army officer, had it

built in 1966. Construction took four years
and it served mainly homesick British
expatriates yearning for an escape from
our tropical heat.
As we eased into the driveway, at
1000-metres above sea level, we were
greeted by a stoical Land Rover Defender
that was refurbished to shuttle guests
between the 19-room resort and Tanah
Rata town.
The intimate entrance of The Lake-
house led me past a downstairs foyer and
living area, up a flight of wooden stairs
with an intricately designed runner, to the
reception, which fronted a grand stairway
leading up to guestrooms on the first floor.
Wooden chandeliers hung from the
ceilings, warm interior lighting almost
always peered from under a lampshade,
which lent a sense of reverence to each
room and hallway. One also almost felt
