JOURNEY
Asian Hospitality
Andrew Parker
shares his experience with the reputable

I
t
was such a relief to see that
my truck had arrived unscathed
throughout its three week voyage
fromAustralia to Malaysia, courtesy
of DB Schenker. It arrived on the
back of a huge truck, which made
my truck look like a toy. It felt great
to drive it down the road from Port Klang
into Kuala Lumpur, a real feeling of
adventure and anticipation of things to
come.
I spent the following six weeks in
Kuala Lumpur, a vibrant city with always
something to do. While living in a friend’s
apartment in Petaling Jaya, I got a taste
of the Malaysian way of life. My friends
wouldwork late andwe would sometimes
go fishing at a number of fishing ponds
in the early hours of the morning. I was
always surprised by the number of keen
people who would be fishing at two or
three in the morning.
I had to buy numerous things for the
trip while in KL, such as tarpaulins, rope,
hardware, and also had the underneath of
my truck rust-proofed. Wherever I went,
people were generous and helpful.
The only people that I found difficult
at times were taxi drivers, but thankfully
I was happy introduced to the MyTeksi
app, which saved me a lot of haggling
with the drivers.
There are huge selections of shopping
centres in KL and I probably visited a good
number of them during my stay. I also
managed to attend the high action Red
Bull Air Race in Putrajaya and the Colours
of Malaysia Festival where I enjoyed the
sight of hundreds of people singing and
dancing in their traditional costumes.
Another interesting place I visited was
the studios of Les Copaque, the creators
of Upin and Ipin and a number of other
popular cartoons. During the tour, we
met some of the voice-over actors, saw
the various steps in making a cartoon and
watched dozens of animators at work on
their computers. It is incredible to see how
a cartoon comes together step by step.
