George Town Festival
1 –31 August, Esplanade, Penang, Malaysia
Penang comes alive this August with the George Town Festival, a month-long celebra-
tion of arts that takes place throughout the UNESCOWorld Heritage Site. The festival
started as celebration of George Town’s UNESCO Heritage Site listing, but it has since
flourished into what some are calling the most vibrant arts festival in Southeast Asia.
It showcases an impressive array of local, regional and international acts, and has
a packed programme of over 90 dance, drama, art, music, and fashion events, and
much more. The unique venues range from auditoriums to five-foot ways, colonial
shop-houses and sidewalk galleries.
Port Dickson International Triathlon
16– 17 August, Port Dickson, Negeri
Sembilan, Malaysia
In a test of endurance and stamina,
athletes will go through a series of
challenges that include swimming,
cycling and running. Marking its 11th
year, this state-sponsored event has
seen a steady rise in its popularity,
growing from 280 participants (from
seven countries) in 2002 to more than
a thousand athletes last year. The event
will be held at Port Dickson, a popular
beach destination in the state of Negeri
Sembilan.
The Pipa Quartet Concert
22 August, SOTATheatre, School of the Arts,
Singapore
The grand dame of Chinese plucked stringed instru-
ments, the pipa is a four-stringed lute endowed with
a highly expressive character and sounds likened to
pearls falling on a jade tray. The Pipa Quartet is led
and formed by artistic director and award-winning
pipa player Dr Samuel Wong and his students, Goh
XueQi, Ivan Chng and Jeremy Wong. A first of its
kind in Southeast Asia, this unique quartet stretches
the boundaries of traditional chamber music, apply-
ing ancient Chinese sounds to contemporary music
tones in exciting ways, making their performance a
unique one that is not to be missed.
MTV World Stage Live in
Malaysia 2014

Save the date! MTV World Stage is
back for the sixth-year running for a
one-night-only outdoor concert that
is set to take place at Surf Beach,
Sunway Lagoon. The 2013 edition
welcomed a whopping 15,000 fans
as it brought award-winning and
multi-platinum artist, Robin Thicke,
along with explosive international
sensations, Far East Movement and
12-member K-Pop super group,
EXO. This year’s line-up will feature
home-grownMalaysian artist, Yuna,
K-pop idol group, Boys Republic
and more exciting international and
local acts.
