Lake Toba
is the largest volcanic
lake in the world. Vast and immense, the
supervolcano is large enough to cradle
the Island of Samosir in the middle.
Most lakes are formed by glaciers or
river damming; Lake Toba, however, is a
geographic outlier as it does not actually
have a river flowing in.
• 45km from Berastagi and high up
in the stunning Batak Highlands of
Lake Toba lies the singularity that is
the
Sipiso-piso Waterfall
. Translated
loosely, it means ‘like a knife’; a name
that’s rather apt, given that it is a single
waterfall that appears to cut powerfully
through the air from a point 120m high
and ending in an impressive fall into
the caldera of Lake Toba. Sometimes
a rainbow can be spotted at the base
of the waterfall.
